Biden Bowl, Anyone? Italy's PM to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause
Passing on unwanted offerings could be considered somewhat rude – unless it's done in the proper manner.
A Charitable Clear-Out
The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul reportedly features items such as a miniature chainsaw-holding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.
The collection, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be sold via competitive bidding by a Rome-based fine art auction house. The specific date has not been finalized, although the goal is to hold the auction during the holiday season, with all funds raised donated to non-profit organizations.
Storage Room Treasures
These gifts reportedly kept in a secure area on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni additionally planning to auction off gifts received by her preceding prime ministers that have been gathering dust indefinitely.
The full gift list has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse emerged earlier this year when a comprehensive document of items received was presented in parliament. The discussion focused on if a legal value limit was being honored. By law, a prime minister cannot take home presents valued above €300.
A Global Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, allegedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A customary Indian garment from India's prime minister.
- A set of adornments from the president of Slovakia.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
- A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
- A tablet from the leader of Ukraine.
- Artworks from Moldova.
- Various other items including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Possibly the strangest gifts were the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," observers have said.
Diplomatic Backdrop
The prime minister has received praise, particularly from her allies, with garnering support from foreign leaders and re-establishing Italy as a significant player on the global scene once again.
The forthcoming sale represents a distinct method to handle the protocol gifts that are collected during a political career.
