An Emotional Moment as Rosenior Overcomes Boundaries

"Rosenior represents an excellent coach that knows the game intimately, which is the most important thing.

"However, in my role as Chelsea's first black footballer, I would be lying to claim this news doesn't move me."

Those are the sentiments of Paul Canoville, who made his historic debut for Chelsea's senior side as a substitute back in April 1982.

On Tuesday, Chelsea appointed RC Strasbourg manager Liam Rosenior, 41, as their new manager after the exit of Enzo Maresca.

The French club is part of the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital-owned ownership group which also controls Chelsea.

Statistics show a mere twelve of African or Caribbean heritage head coaches – not including those in temporary caretaker positions – in England's top flight since it began thirty-four years ago.

"What really strikes me regarding Rosenior is he was raised and developed his game locally, he understands this area," continued Canoville.

"Whenever kids see someone like Liam managing the team they support, a person who looks like them, from a similar background, from a household that fights for what's right… that's profound demonstrating the path is there.

"So yes, it is a huge moment for the club, for the capital, for every young person dreaming big.

"But right now? We must support Rosenior, provide him with what he needs, and let the man do his work."

What Does the Data Indicate?

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit was appointed the Blues' head coach back in the nineties thereby becoming the top flight's first black head coach.

Twelve years later, in 2008, Paul Ince was appointed as the first black English manager in the Premier League after taking charge at Blackburn Rovers.

The Hammers' manager Nuno Espirito Santo currently stands as the sole additional present top flight boss from a minority ethnic background.

The shortage of managers of colour throughout English football corresponds with a lack of representation in the boardroom.

According to the Black Footballers Partnership 2023 study, 43% of Premier League footballers come from African or Caribbean heritage.

Yet, analysis from the equality organization found only 3.2 percent of executive and leadership management teams at 17 of 20 Premier League clubs are held by people from minority ethnic backgrounds.

At first-team coaching level, based on data from 11 clubs, the figure stands at 2%.

Across all coaching positions – including head coaches – from those same 11 clubs, the figure is 5%.

"He has undoubtedly broken barriers in terms of his appointment as a Chelsea head coach, and as an organization, we want to see more of that," said the chief executive of Kick It Out Samuel Okafor.

"It is acknowledged that there exists a wealth of talent present in the black and underrepresented communities... aspiring coaches desire the opportunity to demonstrate what they can do. We need to continue to work hard to break those obstacles down."

Furthermore, the new appointee is set to become one of only four full-time British managers currently managing in the top flight – alongside Sean Dyche, Eddie Howe and Scott Parker – which trails the continent's remaining major divisions in terms of homegrown managers.

16 out of twenty first division managers in Italy are from Italy, 11 of the 20 are Spanish, 12 in the Bundesliga are German and Ten in Ligue 1 are French.

Current Chelsea caretaker manager Calum McFarlane commented: "I'm sure all aspiring British managers from an academy background are, in some way no matter who you support, supporting Liam.

"It's truly motivating for up-and-coming British coaches in the system to see someone get that job with his background and everyone hopes he does highly successful."

'Let's not forget – his appointment is based on talent'

Leroy Rosenior, Rosenior Sr., had a career with clubs such as Fulham, West Ham as well as Queens Park Rangers, and his managerial career peaked with a five-month stint in charge of then-League One side Brentford FC in 2006.

In 2019, he was awarded a Member of the Order of the British Empire in that year's Honours List for services rendered in combating inequality in football and wider society.

When Rosenior Jr retired from playing he pursued his father's footsteps. He started writing articles for a national newspaper, where in 2017 he acknowledged the lack of diversity of black coaches. He highlighted that ethnicity does not determine ability arguing that opportunities must be awarded on merit.

He further expressed the view he has often stated: how significant under-representation results in a failure to understand of players with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage.

During an interview for a football podcast, Rosenior highlighted the way his leading forward, Emmanuel Emegha, had been described as "difficult" and "emotional", but said he could relate to the Dutch player of Nigerian descent. Emegha is set to join him with a move from Strasbourg to Chelsea in July.

In subsequent newspaper articles, he also confessed to being "embarrassed" upon hearing a coach make a discriminatory remark. He vowed his support for the inclusion initiative and wrote an open letter to the former US President during his first US presidency, condemning his "overt" prejudice.

He has subsequently built his reputation as a manager – first at Hull City, later at Strasbourg – with Wayne Rooney said this week he was "among the best coaches I've ever worked with" following their collaboration at Derby County.

Rosenior said goodbye to his former club on Tuesday morning before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.

The Blues had the top flight's first black manager with Gullit as well as the first black captain in Paul Elliott.
