A high-ranking Russian army officer has been fatally wounded following an blast in Moscow, according to official statements.

The event occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device planted beneath a vehicle was set off, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.

Sarvarov held the position of the head of the armed forces' unit responsible for operational readiness.

Authorities stated that one line of inquiry suggests the potential involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.

Media coverage state the blast occurred in a car park close to a residential building.

This latest event follows other high-profile incidents, including:

• General Yaroslav Moskalik was died in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
• General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a explosive placed on a scooter was triggered from afar.

While a source from Ukraine previously attributed Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such allegations are not formally acknowledged as a matter of policy.
